Debbie Sloane Smith and her family were the first year-round residents of Ocean Isle Beach, moving here in 1955 shortly after Hurricane Hazel devastated the island in 1954. Debbie Smith has seen it all since then, including the opening of the pier in 1957, incorporation in 1959, and a ferry system replaced by a swing bridge, later replaced by the current expansion bridge. Mayor since 2003, she will share her fondest memories of an island that is close to the hearts of many.
