This program begins in the museum’s lecture hall with an introduction to the barrier islands, then heads outside to Ocean Isle Beach. The beach is one block from the museum. From there, presenter Hallie Austin will take you for a walk along the dune’s edge while she discusses the importance of the dune system to both people and wildlife. The trek back will be along the water’s edge; Hallie will discuss the inter-tidal zone, animals that use the sand for their home, and the issues with storm surge during hurricanes and tropical storms. Wear appropriate clothing and bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen.
