Now on display in the Museum's Coastal Gallery: The Way We Were, a collection of beautiful oil paintings and prints of evocative scenes from this area's past by Shallotte artist V. Ryan ("Bunny") Lauzon. The artwork is on display through January 31, 2015.

Our newest exhibit features a working model of the two-car cable ferry that operated from 1950-1959 between Brick Landing on the mainland and the East end of Ocean Isle Beach. The model was built by Gerald Strickland.

Jan. 24 -- 11:00 -- Hands-On Fun with Model Trains -- Monte Heppe and other members of the Intracoastal Model Railroaders Club will be here to talk about model railroading. They will have an interactive working model train with a variety of accessories that adults and children can try out.

Jan. 31 -- 11:00 -- Discovery After Dark -- Learn about the mysterious world of nocturnal animals. Discover what owls eat at night by dissecting a sterilized owl pellet.

Feb. 7 -- 11:00 -- The Great Backyard Bird Count -- Learn how easy and fun it is to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count, an annual four-day event (Feb. 13-16, 2015) that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. Participants are asked to count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the event and report their sightings online. In this workshop, Kurt Hugelmeyer and Allison Smith will tell you how to complete the online form, show you what birds you are likely to see, and tell you where you might find them locally.

Feb. 10 -- 6 PM -- Air Force One with Howie Franklin -- Howie Franklin spent most of his Air Force career working as a Flight Steward aboard Air Force One for five U.S. Presidents. He was Chief Flight Steward during the Bush and Clinton administrations. Everyone loves a good story and Howie has hundreds of them. Learn what goes on aboard Air Force One in this engaging presentation.
